Police Officer applicants must meet the following initial qualifications and testing requirements to be considered for employment.
Qualifications
- Be at least 21 years old by the time of hire.
- Be a United States citizen.
- Be a high school graduate or have a GED.
- Post-secondary education preferred but not required.
- No convictions involving crimes of moral turpitude, drugs or weapons offenses.
- No convictions involving family violence or misdemeanor crimes of violence.
- No convictions of DUI during the past 5 years.
- No convictions of misdemeanor property crimes within the past 5 years.
- Have a valid driver's license.

- No more than one moving violation conviction, or being at fault in no more than 1 accident during the past three years.
- No felony convictions.
- If prior military, discharge must be "honorable".
- Live within the local calling area of the Phenix City Police Department and have a minimum response time of 15 minutes.
- Successfully complete the application process.
- Be Alabama P.O.S.T. certified at the time of application or be eligible to become P.O.S.T. certified.

Physical Agility Test:
The Physical agility test is devised to simulate certain specific activities routinely expected of a police officer on patrol or traffic assignment and consists of nine (9) events designed to measure minimum levels of endurance, strength, agility, and coordination
Part A of the Physical Agility Test:
Each activity (except for the trigger pull) in part A has a time limit of 90 sec.
- Climbing - Run a total of 25 yards then scale a six foot wooden fence.
- Weight Drag - Run 50 feet then drag a weight of 165 pounds for 15 feet.
- Balance - Run a total of 25 yards, surmount a 6" balance beam that is 1' off the ground. Walk the beam a distance of 15 feet, jump down and run an additional 25 yards.
- Pushing - Push a police vehicle on a level, paved surface a distance of 15 feet.
- Crawling - Run a total of 25 yards, crawl through an obstacle approximately 24" square and then run an additional 25 yards.
- Trigger Pull:
- Part A of the trigger pull - The applicant will take the sidearm and with the strong hand, pull the trigger eighteen (18) times within 18 seconds.
- Part B of the trigger pull - During Part A of the test, the barrel of the gun will be extended into a 6" circle. During the test the barrel must not touch any side of the circle.
- Part B of the physical agility test. Time limits are as noted.
- Running - 1.5 mile run with a maximum time of 15 min. and 28 sec.
- Sit-up - Sit up laying on back with knees bent, and fingers interlocked behind head. 25 in one (1) min.
- Push-up - Push up with only the hands and feet touching the ground, the tester will maintain a straight and level back position. 22 in one (1) min.
Other Pre-employment Testing and Requirements:
Police Officer applicants must also submit to the following tests and interviews to be considered for employment:
- Criminal history check and background investigation.
- Drivers history investigation.
- Polygraph Test.
- Psychological Test.
- Medical physical exam and drug test.
- Interview Board--Peer based board interview with current full time Police Officers.
- Final interview with the Chief of Police.
Salary Range, Rank Structure and Benefits
Salary Range and Pay Increases:
Starting Base Salary for Patrolman Rank: $27,851.00 per year.
Top Base Salary for Patrolman Rank: $44,168.00 per year.
Pay increase:
Based on a graduated scale. Step raises are awarded based on merit evaluations. Higher rank increases the base pay scale.
Rank Structure and Promotions
Rank Structure:
Patrolman, Corporal, Sergeant/Investigator, Lieutenant, Captain, Assistant Chief, Chief of Police.
Promotions:
Based on testing and eligibility. There is no lateral transfers for Sergeant/Investigator, Lieutenant, or Captain Rank.
- Eligibility for the Sergeant/Investigator exam requires three years of experience in the Patrolman rank with the Phenix City Police Department.
- Eligibility for Lieutenant and Captain exam requires one year of experience in the lower rank (one year as Sgt. for Lieutenant exam and one year as Lt. for the Captain exam) with the Phenix City Police Department.
- The positions of Assistant Police Chief and Chief of Police are appointed by the City Council and City Manager.
Benefits
Uniforms and Equipment:
Phenix City Police Department provides Uniforms, leather gear, and other equipment. The departmental issue service weapon is a .40 caliber Glock semi-automatic pistol.
Work Schedule:
The Phenix City Police Department is on a 3/2/2/3 work schedule. Officers work three 12 hour shifts on their three work days and are then off for two days then will work two 12 hours shifts on their next 2 work days after which they will be off for 3 days. Day and night shifts rotate every 120 days.
Vacation:
Eight (8) hours of vacation for each 174 regularly scheduled work hours on active pay status, increasing after five years, and a maximum carry over of 120 hours per year, also increasing after five years.
Holidays:
14 paid holidays per year.
Sick Leave:
Eight (8) hours of sick leave for each for 174 regularly scheduled work hours on active pay status, with no maximum accumulation.
Retirement:
Phenix City Police Department participates in the State Retirement System of Alabama.
Health and Dental Insurance:
The City of Phenix City offers insurance through Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Alabama with employee benefits paid by the city. Employees may include family coverage and pay the difference through payroll deduction.
Other Benefits:
Life insurance, credit union membership, Worker's Compensation, supplemental insurance programs and other services and benefits are available through the department.
