The Fire Suppression Division is the vanguard of the Phenix City Fire Rescue. They maintain a constant state of readiness to respond to a myriad of emergencies (fire fighting, medical, vehicle collisions and extrications, hazardous materials, etc.), which occur in and about the city of Phenix City.
Rank structure under the Suppression Division
- Battalion Chief:
Must be able to manage on a department level; must be capable of developing and managing a budget. Assistant Chiefs are responsible for assuming command at incidents and must possess excellent knowledge of departmental procedures, as well as, supervisor and management practices.
- Captain:
Must insure their units are able to provide quality service to the public in fire suppression, fire prevention, public fire safety education and other assigned duties. Captain’s are responsible for assuming command at incidents and must have good working knowledge of fire fighting tactics and strategy, rescue operations supervising and management practices and procedures. Captains must have strong leadership and communication skills and ability to plan and supervise work and management schedules.
- Sergeant / Driver Engineer:
Driver / Engineer is responsible for proper operation and preventive maintenance of the fire apparatus and related equipment. He or she must be a skilled apparatus operator, capable of driving large fire apparatus under normal conditions as well as when responding to emergency incidents. He or she must be able to provide adequate fire streams and other fire ground requirements.
- Fire Fighter:
Are responsible for the protection of life and property through firefighting activities, fire prevention and public fire safety education. A major portion of a firefighter’s work involves participation in supervised in-service inspection activities, drills and training, routine maintenance of equipment and apparatus. Work at incident scenes and an officer normally supervises fire stations.

Hiring Requirements:
- Must be 18 years of age
- High School Diploma or GED
- Valid Drivers License
- Able to pass extensive criminal background investigation
- Pass written and psychological examinations
- Pass a physical agility test (CPAT-Candidate Physical Agility Test)
- Pass medical examination
- Good Moral Character
- No Criminal Convictions
- U.S. Citizen
- Past Military Service Personnel must have Honorable Discharge

After Being Hired By Phenix City Fire Rescue:
- The applicant must pass the Firefighter I/II certification training.
- Applicant will obtain Alabama Basic Emergency Medical Technician license within eighteen (18) months of date of hire.
